While attending college as an older twenty-something adult, I came to understand that I must enroll in an internship program in order to acquire some real-world work experience under my belt before I graduate. So, I went to the internship program director and applied for several different internships.
While working with the internship program director, I learned that my college (The University of Michigan) does not help students find jobs after graduation (outside of engineering and medical students). I was told that by earning my degree, the University had prepared me to self-advocate and seek employment on my own.
I asked if there were headhunters for marketing graduates, and again, I was told that by performing my roles well in the internships, I would gain another self-advocacy tool to help me become gainfully employed. Additionally, I was advised to join student-professional organizations to network and build relationships with professionals in my industry so that when I graduate, I will have a good network.
Unfortunately, I learned that few companies represent marketing professionals in the USA but that I could seek services with outside professional employer organizations in Detroit Metropolitan area to secure a solid career move upon graduation.
As a direct result of those suggestions, I was able to do the following before graduation:
- Internship with Olympia Entertainment within Illich Holdings, Inc. at The Fox Theater, Downtown Detroit
- Internship with Universal Music Company
- Treasurer with the PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America). PRSSA is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communications.
- Internship with WXYZ Channel 7 Detroit
- Pro bono Public Relations Director for House of Costumes, Downtown Plymouth
While there are wonderful professional employer organizations in Detroit that provide HR services to marketing companies, there are very few that provide recruitment.
Top marketing recruiting agencies in USA
At the time of graduation, marketing recruitment agencies were very few and far between. Furthermore, the companies that did exist only provided services to seasoned practitioners, not entry-level rookies. Today, I could benefit from those services as I am one of those seasoned professionals, but I did it the old school way back then.
To start, I affiliated myself with many different professional organizations in the marketing industry, networked, built, and maintained relationships, volunteered on several boards, and attended all the events and workshops offered. As a result, I gained industry insight, added to my skill set, and built one heck of a network of really cool, talented marketers. Here are some of the organizations that I still belong to:
- American Advertising Federation (AAF)
- American Marketing Association (AMA)
- Direct Marketing Association of Detroit (dMAD)
- University of Michigan Alumni Association
- University Event Planners Association
- Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)
Here’s a list of the top twelve marketing recruiting companies in the USA:
- Aquent
- Robert Half
- Aerotek
- Express
- Mondo
- Cornerstone Staffing Solutions
- Lucas Group
- AppleOne Employment Services
- MarketPro
- Vaco
- Hire Dynamics
- Corner Resources
Back when I graduated college and was looking for an entry-level marketing position, Aquent was one of the only marketing recruiting companies in the game! And at that time, they were looking for seasoned marketing professionals for their clients, which I did not qualify for (yet). So, I applied for a position within their company and had several interviews for a recruiter position.
Concurrently, I was applying for positions within advertising agencies and landed my first position as a Public Relations Account Executive. From there, I moved on to the company I still work for today – we are a full-service digital marketing firm. Currently, I am the SEO Production Manager / Senior Writer.
With all the resources available today for up-and-coming marketing professionals graduating from college, they will have a much easier time finding employment opportunities.
What is the difference between recruiting and recruiting marketing?
So, what are recruitment marketing agencies anyway? Recruitment marketing agencies specialize in using marketing techniques to attract and engage potential candidates. They have expertise in areas such as employer branding, social media marketing, content marketing, and candidate experience.
Recruitment is the process of seeking qualified candidates to fill specific job vacancies. In contrast, recruitment marketing is the process of targeting a wider audience, including passive job seekers who may not be actively looking for a job but can be attracted by captivating employer branding and opportunities.
Marketing recruitment companies play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between talent and opportunity within the marketing industry. Their duties include screening applicants to ensure they have the required skills and cultural fit for their clients’ companies. They often conduct in-depth interviews, background checks, and even skill assessments, offering an added layer of vetting before candidates are presented to potential employers.
One of their essential tasks is building and maintaining relationships with both job seekers and companies. This involves networking within the industry, attending events, and staying updated on the latest marketing trends and growing skills. Understanding the unique needs of each business helps them tailor their search and find the perfect match, which is particularly crucial in a dynamic field like marketing.
Moreover, these agencies craft compelling job descriptions and advertisements, utilizing their expertise in employer branding to attract top talent. They often manage job postings across various platforms, leveraging SEO and other digital marketing strategies to ensure maximum visibility.
Additionally, they play an advisory role, offering insights into market salary rates, job market trends, and training opportunities that can help professionals advance in their careers. They also provide counseling and interview preparation tips to candidates, giving them the tools needed to navigate the hiring process successfully.
Lastly, they must stay organized and efficient, managing their database of candidates and ensuring timely communication between all parties involved. This involves using advanced recruitment software and applicant tracking systems to keep everything streamlined.
In essence, marketing recruitment companies act as strategic partners for both marketing professionals and businesses, ensuring that the right people are connected with the right opportunities. They help alleviate the often-overwhelming process of job seeking and hiring by leveraging their industry expertise, extensive networks, and specialized tools to create efficient, effective matches that benefit everyone involved.
Are there companies that represent marketing professionals in USA?
In conclusion, while there are more marketing recruitment agencies than there were just twenty years ago, it is still crucial for college students to do as many internships as they are able, to join student-professional networking groups, and to actively build and maintain relationships within their intended industry to maximize career opportunities and personal growth.
