Fortunately, as professionals in the marketing world, we strive to develop the ultimate work environment at most firms. Maybe it is because we have a lot of creative professionals or that our industry, at its core, is artistic with many progressive, forward-thinking leaders. Ok so maybe we’re not all like Google, but we’re not stuffy suit and tie joints anymore either.
My current workplace is definitely a perfect fit for my personality, hence why I have been working with this agency for over nineteen years. And by agency standards, that’s a lifetime, as there is a high turnover rate. In fact, according to Forbes magazine, “Retaining talent is not a new challenge facing the advertising industry. The average annual agency turnover rates clock in at about 30%, second only to tourism. This is a real problem. After all, in a service- and relationship-based business, an agency’s offering is only as good its people,”.
There is open communication, an outstanding work-life balance as I get to work from home three days a week, free professional training, and ample amenities. I am recognized for jobs well done, and we have a superb location near Royal Oak, Michigan, along the historic Woodward Avenue. It also has a big picture window that overlooks Woodward, which delivers front-row seats for the annual Woodward Cruise event that brings over two million visitors to town, all in one August weekend.
While my mom would be so ecstatic to know I have Woodward Avenue office space, it is a bit of a cruise (no pun intended) to get to the studio from my home. My home is located in an area with all the essential qualities I desire to be around, including many inland lakes, state parks, and forest land, plenty of room between houses, and an abundance of wildlife.
If I could change one thing about my current work environment, it would be to move our studio closer to my home. It might be quite the undertaking to make a commercial move of services because we have a lot of fragile photography equipment, furniture, and technology devices. Not to mention, all of our clients love our location as it is actually centrally located in southeast Michigan. Also, and probably most importantly, my boss lives nearby! (I digress)
Indeed (the #1 job site in the world with over 350M+ unique visitors every month) suggests to prospective employees to define what their ideal work environment is by pondering the following list of prompts as everyone has their definition of what an ideal work environment looks like:
- “Communication between employers and employees
- Understanding of said company’s goals or strategies
- Work-life balance
- Training programs
- Access to amenities
- Physical workspace and office building design
- Employee recognition
- Management approach,”.
Recognizing efforts could be done through formal recognition programs, team events, or simple gestures of appreciation. Furthermore, employee recognition in acknowledging and celebrating the achievements and contributions of team members has been shown to boost morale, motivation, and job satisfaction.
So, what does a positive work environment look like anyway? Let’s find out.
What are positive characteristics of a work environment?
A work environment, whether positive or negative, can profoundly affect one’s day-to-day life, resulting in a need for space where team members strive for a shared purpose, value, and trust.
Michigan State University Worklife Office suggests trying the following when cultivating positive behaviors in the workplace:
“Model positive and respectful behavior in your interactions – Be accountable, don’t play the blame game. Instead, take responsibility and risk being vulnerable to encourage others to be honest and responsible. Encourage an environment where it’s okay to make mistakes and move forward.
Show your gratitude and appreciation – Send a thank you note or say it during a meeting.
Celebrate wins – Look for ways to celebrate whether it’s an employee birthday or recognizing a milestone or achieving a goal. Honoring wins and milestones improves morale by encouraging the person and showing team members that important events are noticed and praised,”.
Additional positive characteristics that contribute to a great work environment include fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity. When people feel valued and included, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated in their work.
Another critical aspect is providing opportunities for growth and development. Continuous learning and professional development initiatives can help employees enhance their skills, stay motivated, and feel invested in their careers.
Furthermore, promoting work-life balance is essential in today’s fast-paced work culture. Encouraging employees to prioritize their well-being and personal lives can lead to increased job satisfaction, reduced stress, and better overall mental health. Flexible work arrangements, wellness programs, and mental health resources can all contribute to a healthier work-life balance.
A supportive management approach is also vital in creating a positive work environment. Leaders who are approachable, supportive, and open to feedback can help foster a culture of trust and collaboration. Clear communication, transparency, and effective conflict-resolution strategies are essential for building strong relationships between employees and management. I am very blessed to have this type of management, and as a single mom of two teenage sons, I can tell you that I wouldn’t have a job without that flexibility piece!
Positive environment examples
Okay, we have talked about what a positive work environment might look like, provide and support, but what about other areas that cultivate an overall healthy employee, one that addresses the complete human being – body, mind, and soul?
Offering access to amenities such as comfortable workspaces, relaxation areas, and wellness facilities positively contributes to a more enjoyable work environment. Most importantly, these amenities address the whole human being and improve employee well-being and satisfaction while creating a more positive experience at work.
Moreover, having a physical workspace and office building design that is conducive to productivity and collaboration can enhance the overall work environment. Comfortable seating, natural light, and well-designed communal spaces can create a more inviting and inspiring atmosphere for employees.
A positive environment should encompass benefits and programs that support employee well-being holistically, including initiatives like mental health support, fitness classes, healthy snack options, and even incentives for volunteering or community involvement.
All these elements contribute to a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and motivated. It’s about recognizing that employees are not just workers but individuals with multifaceted needs that should be addressed in order to thrive in their roles truly.
Creating a space where people can bring their whole selves to work and feel like valued members of a community fosters loyalty, engagement, and a sense of belonging.
Characteristics of an ideal work environment
In conclusion, if you are not working with a company that values its team members by providing ideal work environments, it’s time to find a place that does. There are plenty out there; happy hunting!
