Difference Between Rochester NY and Rochester MI

The differences between Rochester, Michigan, and Rochester, New York are numerous. First, Rochester, New York, gets a lot more snow than Rochester, Michigan typically gets as it is located in northern, upstate New York, on Lake Ontario, while Rochester, Michigan is in the southern part of Michigan, closest to Lake St Claire, a connecting lake between the Detroit River and Lake Huron.

Yes, we both have Great Lakes in our states and we can face harsh winters but we are a driving distance apart of 452 miles if we stay in the States and 330 miles if we go through Canada or, by boat, traveling 423 nautical miles. I think a boating adventure to upstate New York would be a fascinating summer trip!

Although, as a child of the 1980s, teen, and young adult in the 1990s, you can bet the first thing I think of when Rochester, Michigan, is mentioned – that’s right, Madonna, the pop star. Especially being a fellow Michigander and an alumnus of The University of Michigan, I know a thing or two about musicians from our area.

Also, when Rochester, Michigan, comes to mind, I think of my aunt, who is a prominent stylist at a bougie salon in downtown Rochester. She has worked under famous stylists from Los Angeles to New York City. Downtown Rochester is located in southeast Michigan on the northeast end of Oakland County.

According to the city’s official government website, “The City of Rochester, settled in 1817, is a full service community offering residents, visitors and businesses the highest quality municipal services. The first settlers in what would become Rochester, Michigan, the Graham family, built a log cabin in 1817. The cabin was located on present-day 3rd St., just west of Main. The city was named after Rochester, New York, just like Rochester, Minnesota, as many early settlers in the area were formerly from the state of New York.

On the other hand, Rochester, New York’s official government website, shares this about their city, “…Rochester has everything a major metro city has to offer from a cultural standpoint with all the fun and beauty that comes with a four-season adventure destination. With something for everyone, we know that you will be surprised with everything you can see and do within the hidden gem that is Rochester, NY.
