When I was around thirteen years old, my favorite auntie got married and moved away to Chicago, which wasn’t that far since we lived in Michigan (MI). Then she moved to Cleveland and back to Michigan, to Atlanta, Georgia, and finally settled down in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC). In the twenty-five-plus years that she and her family have lived there, I have made that Michigan to North Carolina drive too many times to count.
Door to door, from the Greater Detroit area in MI to the Outer Banks in NC, it is 846 miles. I can say that I much prefer driving there versus flying. The typical flight from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) to Raleigh Durham Airport (RDU) looks something like this:
- Expect to add an hour and a half drive time to DTW from home
- It is a one-hour-and-forty-minute flight to upwards of over five hours in the air. If you’re fortunate enough to get one of the two direct flights available, your total flight time, with getting baggage, would be about three hours. If you are not so lucky and you have to take a connecting flight, well, you could be looking at spending eight to nine hours in airports and airplanes. That’s only if they are all on time!
- Plus, add to the fact that we have to get there at least two hours early for long security lines (thanks to September 11, 2001)
- Lastly, the drive time from RDU to our destination is two hours away
- Direct flight = 8.5 hours travel time
- One-stop flight = +-13.5 hours of travel time
Driving from my home to my family’s home looks like this:
- Leave MI home at 6 am
- Arrive in NC around 7 pm
- Total drive time = 13.5 hours
Add all the comforts of stopping when I need to stretch, carry giant bottles of shampoo, eat when and where I like, no need to get permission from the bathroom police to “go,” recline my seat, cooler full of my favorite drinks and snacks, fresh air, etc. Should I go on?
Can you take a bus from Michigan to North Carolina?
Absolutely! When I was first married, my mom moved down to live with her sister in NC. Her sister, my auntie, needed her help with her little kids so she could go back to college. While my mom had some misgivings, she went anyway (that’s another article altogether!).
I am my mother’s only child, and when she lived those 846 miles away, she missed me terribly. At that time, she had some vision loss, so she was unable to drive, but she undoubtedly hated to fly. Her options were to wait for her sister to get time off or take the bus. She took the bus every chance she got!
The quickest trip with Greyhound takes about sixteen hours and forty-five minutes to twenty hours, with an expected minimum amount of fourteen stops. She was willing to go to any lengths to see her daughter and come home!

All the summer trips to NC and we hardly ever had optimal times for campfires – it was too dang hot!

What are North Carolina summers like?
Well, I can tell you from personal experience, at least in the Outer Banks area from June to August, that it is so flipping hot first thing in the morning. What is that? Is it because it’s on the east coast, and they get a hot summer sunrise? Seriously, I couldn’t even drink my morning coffee when I was there! We get hot in southeast MI, and we also get very humid because we’re a peninsula like Florida, but our high for the day is usually from 3-5 pm, not at the crack of dawn.
WRAL News (from the Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville area shares that “Temperatures tend to be pretty mild. Wilmoth says the temperatures range from a low of 62°F in June to a high of 92°F in July. July and August in the Piedmont region of North Carolina are typically hot and humid,”.
