As a child of the 1970s and 1980s who grew up with undiagnosed ADHD and a lot of free will, I tended to misplace things quite frequently. Today, I still misplace things, but I have tools to work with, so it happens less frequently.
Whenever I lost an item when I was with my grandparents, I can distinctly remember my Nana (grandmother) shouting this Italian prayer, “Glorioso Sant’Antonio, amico di Gesù, tu che hai trovato le cose perdute, fa che possa ritrovare (nome dell’oggetto smarrito). Intercedi presso il Signore affinché con il tuo aiuto ottenga questa grazia.
Prometto di esserti sempre riconoscente, e di diffondere in ogni modo possibile la devozione verso di te,”.
Which in English means, “Glorious St. Anthony, friend of Jesus, you who have found lost things, help me to find (name of the lost item). Intercede with the Lord so that, with your help, I may obtain this favor.
I promise to always be grateful to you, and to spread devotion to you in every possible way,”.
Not only is St. Anthonio well known, but he’s invoked and venerated all over the world as the patron saint for the recovery of lost items, and he is associated with many miracles involving lost people, lost things, or even lost spiritual goods. However, in Texas, he is best known for why San Antonio bears its name. Let’s see what the experts have to say about how that occurred.
From the University of the Incarnate Word, “San Antonio was given its name on June 13, 1691, because that was the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua — and the day that a Spanish expedition came to the river they called Rio San Antonio. But San Antonio was not founded until 1718, when its first mission and first presidio were established at San Pedro Springs,”.
Wikipedia states this about San Antonio, “Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city in 1731 became the first chartered civil settlement in what is now present-day Texas. The area was then part of the Spanish Empire. From 1821 to 1836, it was part of the Mexican Republic. It is the oldest municipality in Texas,”.
Wikipedia went on to add that, “The city contains five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions, including The Alamo and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park,”.
What is St. Anthony of Padua the patron saint for?
According to the stories, St. Anthony of Padua was recognized for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of sacred scripture, and his undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick. Most notably, I learned that he was one of the most quickly canonized saints in the history of the Catholic Church.
According to a Pastoral Theologist’s journal, Walking Humbly with God, “St. Anthony has been known as the most celebrated of the followers of Francis of Assisi. He is the patron saint of Lisbon, Portugal and Padua, Italy and other places all over the world. In Portugal, Italy, France and Spain, St. Anthony is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. Saint Anthony is known in Portugal, Spain, and Brazil as a marriage saint, because legends exist of him reconciling couples. In 1692, Spanish missionaries in North America came across a small Native American community along what was then known as the Yanaguana river on the feast day of Saint Anthony, June 13th The Franciscan chaplain, Father Massanet renamed the river in his honor, and eventually built a small mission church nearby. This mission became the focal point of a small community that eventually grew in size to become the seventh-largest city in the country, the US city of San Antonio, TX,”.
