Handmade gifts are special because the artist puts a piece of their heart, themselves, and a little bit of love into what they create for the intended recipient.
For example, one year for a Mother’s Day gift, my youngest son drew a cartoon caricature of him and I in a camping scene and framed it. He is remarkably talented at drawing! That creation still hangs with pride on my wall today.
My mom created many gifts for me, from summertime to Christmas wreaths, and she even created all of my bridal party’s flower arrangements, including boutonnieres, bouquets, and centerpiece arrangements, as well as my main bouquet, which I still have today, even though I am divorced.
Furthermore, these gifts are especially priceless as my mom has passed on, but her homemade gifts live on and carry out her memory in real time each Christmas when I hang those beautiful wreaths.
My closest cousin has also been creative in his gift giving. For a housewarming gift, he made a wooden bench that matched the front porch post. Another year, he created a picture frame from an old wooden window and put a photographic print in it; it still hangs on my wall today.
My grandmother crocheted beautiful blankets for all her children, and my mom crocheted stunning baby blankets for my sons – her only grandchildren. One of my best friends’ mom knitted a wonderful blanket that goes perfectly in my living room. And then there is my other best friend’s family – they are extremely gifted seamstresses.
In fact, they have such an enormous amount of talent that they made not only my wedding gown but also my bridesmaids’ dresses. They also made a custom female vampire costume just for me since I love Halloween so much! I have a couple of other costumes they made from their store after her mom retired as well.
In my family, extended family, and close friend group, there is a lot of creative talent in the following areas:
- Writers
- Musicians
- Singers
- Lyricists
- Drawing artists
- Painting artists
- Photography artists
- Woodworking artists
- Crafting artists
- Flower arrangement artists
- Collage artists
- Ceramicists – pottery, porcelain
- Textile artists – weaving, quilting, embroidery, sewing
- Jewelry designers
According to an article about handmade gifts from Mill Valley News, a student artist writes, “Many times, it can be a huge struggle to get gifts for your friends and family. I can go shopping for hours just to find that perfect gift, and I can still walk out empty-handed. However, in recent years, I’ve turned to using my own hands to make gifts.
Seeing a present for someone special come together can truly be magical.
When all of your hard work is done, whether that be sanding a block of wood for thirteen hours to make it into a heart, or writing a heartfelt note to someone you care about, you finally see the final product. For me, the best part is seeing the reaction of the person you’re giving it to. To see someone light up with happiness because of you is just awesome.
In short, homemade gifts can be a phenomenal way to show how you care. It can truly be magical how much some hard work and effort can make a beautiful gift and the impact it can have on a person,”.
Successful art businesses
When my best friend, who is a seamstress, was a little girl, she and her older sister were heavily involved in figure skating. Her mom was a single mom and could not afford to keep buying the expensive skating costumes required for their competitions. Being frugal and creative, her mom (Maggie) started sewing their costumes on her own instead of buying them from someone else.
Her mom did so well that the other moms in their skating community began asking Maggie where she had the girls’ costumes made, and, of course, she replied that she had created them herself. The skating costumes were so unique and beautiful that, naturally, the other moms started hiring my friend’s mom to make their children’s costumes. Thus, a business was born.
Maggie was doing so well that she ran out of space to continue sewing in her home. She opened a brick-and-mortar shop called Costumes. Maggie also saw an opportunity to expand on her business as she made her daughters Halloween costumes too, and you might guess that other people started to ask her to do the same for their children, as they were extremely high quality and nothing like the bagged costumes you could get at any one of those seasonal pop-up Halloween stores. A few years later, they moved to a larger location in the Old Village of Plymouth, MI, and renamed it “House of Costumes” because it was a historic Victorian home, with the store downstairs and their living quarters upstairs.
The girls grew older, and their business expanded to rental-only costumes for Halloween. Maggie continued to sew for her skating customers throughout the year, taking a break in September and October for the Halloween season. Working in my friend’s family store was my first retail job at fourteen, and I continued to work for them every season until I was thirty-two, when Maggie decided to retire.
Maggie continues to sew for a select few skating customers, and my friend and her sister started a home goods business called Eclectic Home: “Two sisters from Metro Detroit, recognized for their creative flair and innovation, have joined forces to create a brand that reflects their unique style. With nearly 35 years of collaboration under their belts, they’re proud to introduce Eclectic Home. Specializing in handpicked vintage items and funky fashion finds, they bring a fresh perspective to home decor.
With backgrounds in home styling, sewing, and merchandising, these sisters make the perfect team. Along with the members of their creative team, they have truly generated an eclectic company that they are so proud to call their own,”.
Which art business is profitable?
Not only was my friend’s costume business and home goods company successful, but my mentor/boss/long-term friend’s commercial photography company has also been profitable. It’s why I have been with this company for twenty-one years this month! Additionally, when the economy sank in 2008, my boss began to utilize his other talents and started the digital marketing side of the business.
His first and longest client we work with is also a creative company: a caricature artist who is now nationwide and very profitable. Goofy Faces is one of our favorite clients to work for, and we hope they will be with us until they retire – or we do, whichever comes first!
Why handmade gifts are special
In conclusion, handmade gifts stand apart because they carry stories, memories, and the maker’s genuine care. Whether created by family, friends, or skilled artists, these pieces remind us that the most meaningful gifts are those made with heart and intention.
